Abstract:
The Computational Algebra System Magma has its origins in the computer program GROUPS
developed in 1965 and the Cayley language used during the 1970s and 1980 for computing
with groups, rings, fields and graph theory.  Magma development began in 1990.  John
Cannon managed these projects from their inception until 2023.  Today Magma is an
essential research tool in algebra, number theory, algebraic and arithmetic geometry,
Lie theory, combinatorics, ...   
This talk illustrates the breadth of Magma's computational ability in a variety of 
topics, using Magma as a tool to explore interesting examples.  Some recent results 
where Magma has played an essential role in the proof will also be described.
