I’ll explain a simple characterisation of functions of bounded variation (as in joint work with Brezis, Seeger and Van Schaftingen) and contrast it with an almost characterization using wavelet coefficients. Time permitting, I’ll also describe some other ways in which the familiar notion of orthogonality can be generalised and illustrate them with applications.
