Computational Algebra Seminar: Unger -- Permuation Group Algorithms - Normal structure

Speaker: Bill Unger (Sydney, Magma)
Title: Permutation Group Algorithms - Normal structure
Time & Place: 15:00-16:00, Thursday 6 March, SMRI Seminar Room
Abstract:
I will talk about Magma's suite of permutation group algorithms for computing useful
normal subgroups of a permutation group. In particular I will discuss the soluble radical
method for group calculations and how Magma computes the normal subgroups needed to
effectively use this. Finding the socle of a primitive group is particularly important,
and our methods make use of the Classification of Finite Simple Groups.

In several cases the algorithms are unpublished improvements on published algorithms.
