Abstract: In this talk I will discuss recent joint work with Adam Thompson in which we construct new families, depending on arbitrarily many parameters, of expanding Ricci solitons starting in dimension 4. These solitons live on vector bundles over Riemann surfaces, and they have nilpotent symmetry in the fibre directions. Their relevance comes from the fact that they describe the asymptotic behavior of Ricci flows (on closed manifolds) that collapse with bounded curvature. The construction involves a dimension-reduction argument to the harmonic-Einstein equation, and a close link with the theory of Higgs bundles.
