MaPSS: Maths Postgraduate Seminar Series: Joshua Ciappara -- An introduction to p-adic analysis

The next MaPSS talk of this semester will be at 17:00 on Tuesday(!) 8th of October in
Carslaw 535.  It's a great opportunity to meet fellow postgrads, listen to an
interesting talk, and of course get some free pizza!

Speaker: Joshua Ciappara 

Title: An introduction to p-adic analysis 

Abstract: Beginning with a discussion of ideas due to Kurt Hensel, we motivate and then
construct the field of p-adic numbers \mathbb{Q}_p.  En route, we will witness the
unusual geometry of ultrametric spaces and a classification theorem due to Ostrowski.
To conclude, we mention some applications, including a result of Hasse--Minkowski,
Hensel's Lemma, and directions of further study (rigid geometry, p-adic differential
equations, ...)
